“Those who followed this trial with common sense will undoubtedly feel disappointed, just as I am deeply disappointed with this decision,” Anies said after the hearing. He questioned the fairness of the judicial process, stating, “If a case as clear as this, involving someone like Tom, can lead to criminalization, what about the millions of other Indonesian citizens?”
Anies emphasized his support for any steps taken to seek justice in the case and urged authorities to reform the legal system. “If trust in our legal and judicial system collapses, it is the nation itself that will collapse,” he warned.
The Jakarta Corruption Court convicted Tom Lembong of corruption related to sugar imports, sentencing him to 4.5 years in prison and a fine of Rp750 million (approximately $50,000). Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment. The sentence, delivered by Chief Judge Dennis Arab Fatrika, was lighter than the seven years demanded by prosecutors.
